A Few Surprising Facts About Ants

In most parts of the world, ants are more of an annoyance than a pest. Across the globe, there are more than 10,000 different ant species. Ants are clever creatures and durable. They are also fascinating. Here are a few surprising facts about ants.

Ants are Incredibly Strong

ants pl1Ants are stronger than you might think. The bugs are able to carry much more than their own body weight. In fact, they have the strength to carry from 10 to 50 times their weight. The amount that they can carry is based on the species. For instance, if you run into an Asian weaver ant, it can lift about 100 times its own body mass. The small size of an ant is why the bugs are able to carry so much more than their body weight. They can also generate more force due to their muscles featuring a greater cross-section area compared to their body size.

Ants Don’t Have Ears or Lungs

Ants don’t have ears, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t hear. To hear, the insects pay attention to the vibrations in the ground. They use ground vibrations when searching for food or as an alarm. Ants have a subgenual organ, which is just beneath their knee, to feel these vibrations.

Because of their diminutive size, ants don’t have room in their bodies for a complex respiratory system. Instead, they have a unique way to move oxygen around. Basically, ants use spiracles, which are a set of holes positioned in the sides of their bodies, to breathe. The spiracles connect to each other through a tubing system, and this distributes oxygen to the cells.

Ants Know How to Farm

Like humans, ants farm other creatures. Humans raise pigs, chickens, cows, sheep and fish for food. Ants do this with insects. In most cases, ants farm aphids. They protect them from natural predators and shelter them against rain showers. By farming aphids, ants have constant access to honeydew.

Ants are Able to Swim

Actually, just some ants are able to swim. Their ability to do so depends on the ant species. Showing their amazing ability to survive harsh situations, ants have figured out how to doggie paddle when they wind up in water. The insects can hold their breath underwater for a long time. They can also form lifeboats to live through floods. The bugs link legs, forming an ant lifeboat. Once they do this, they can float safely through deep waterways.

Ants are Best Outside

Ants are surprising creatures, ones that don’t have ears but can still hear and breathe without lungs. Ants farm and swim. They are also incredibly strong. While these facts about ants are interesting, it doesn’t mean that you want to live with them. Impact Pest Elimination can help solve pest issues like ant infestations.
